Background to the research project

Students involved in Land Survey projects often experience difficulties when carrying out practical survey tasks due to the relatively short one-on-one field demonstration time in the academic year. This DIT research project aims to evaluate the enhancement of students’ practical learning experience when using a number of short videos with voice over instructions. These video clips have been specifically designed to instruct the learner in the correct use of some basic Land Survey equipment including levels and theodolites. The video material can be directly accessed in the field on you-tube via the www.

A list of the levelling videos are now available at:

The videos are intended as an enhancement rather than a replacement to the more traditional forms of demonstration and notes based instruction, but combined with course notes they provide a flexible multi-media approach to learning.

The short term objective of the GeoLearn Multi-Media Resources Project is to assess the potential of pedagogically designed video demonstrations in supporting the learning requirements of students in the Spatial Information Sciences. Longer term goals include development of other potentially advantageous material for mobile learning.

This project is funded and supported under the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) Staff Fellowship Programme of 2011 which was formally launched in September this year. An introduction to the rationale behind the project and its expected outcomes can be viewed on the the attached video link: DIT Fellowship launch

An interim presentation of findings to date will be available from the DIT Annual Showcase in January 2011 and subsequent postings on this Blog will keep you informed of the project processes and outcomes including a links to publications.
